Loading a car onto a tilt tray, or a 4WD onto a trailer, is where most people give up and ring a mate. A pair of 2.5 m alloy ramps at 20 kg each changes that arithmetic, because one person can carry, place and lock them without help.

Where the 2800 kg figure comes from

The supplier is unusually clear on the rating: 1400 kg per ramp, 2800 kg for the pair. Both numbers are published side by side, which means you can work to the per-ramp figure whenever a load sits unevenly. A car crabbing onto the ramps, or a machine with an offset centre of gravity, puts more than half its mass on one rail. At 249 cm long the ramps give a usable run-up, and the 31 cm width takes a car tyre comfortably rather than asking the driver to thread it.

Marine grade alloy and serrated slats

Marine grade alloy is the reason these can live on a trailer permanently. It does not rust when the surface gets chipped by a tyre lug, and coastal air does not eat it the way it eats painted steel. The slats are serrated rather than smooth, so a wet tyre or a boot has something to key into on the way up. Lock-in tabs at the top end hook the ramps to the trailer or truck deck and hold them there while the load transfers, which is the point at which an unsecured ramp is most likely to kick sideways. The ramps are machine welded and need no assembly.

Before the first load

• Where a load sits unevenly, work to the 1400 kg per-ramp figure rather than the pair total.
• Engage the lock-in tabs on both ramps and check they are seated before driving anything on.
• This is bulky freight: the pair ships as two cartons of 248 x 33 x 13 cm at 21 kg gross each. Make sure you have clear access and somewhere to store 2.5 m ramps.
