Back a trailer up after dark and two things bite: the number plate is a black rectangle, and the step down from the cab is a guess. These small LED pods handle both jobs, and the same unit doubles as a cargo lamp or an underbonnet light. Two come in the pack.

Six diodes and a five-watt draw

Each pod carries six 2835-SMD diodes. The supplier rates those at 100 lumens each and gives no combined figure for the pod, so take the number as stated rather than multiplied out. Draw is listed as low as 5 W, which matters on a trailer running off a small auxiliary circuit, and rated life is 10,000 hours. Sealing is IP65: dust-tight, and tested against water jets rather than immersion. That covers a plate recess or an exposed step, but it is not a rating for anything that will sit underwater.

Two wires, two holes, done

Wiring is about as simple as vehicle lighting gets. Two leads run from each pod, red positive and black negative, roughly 15 cm long. Mounting means drilling a pair of holes at the spacing the supplier gives as 2-3/16 inches, near enough to 55.6 mm, then pulling the light down with the screws included. At 66 x 33 x 25 mm the housing tucks under a lip or into a plate recess without standing proud of the panel, and the 12-24 V range means one part number covers a car, a caravan and a 24 V truck.

Before you fit these

• Number plate lighting has its own positioning and illumination requirements, and restrictions apply to white light shown to the rear. Confirm the requirements that apply to your vehicle or trailer and your state before fitting for road use.
• Used as a step, dome, cargo or underbonnet lamp, restrictions on light visible to the front or rear while driving still apply.
• IP65 is not a submersion rating. Choose a mounting position that will not sit underwater.
• The housing material is contradictory in the supplier's data. If corrosion resistance matters, such as on a boat trailer or coastal run, check the item on arrival before you drill.

Two pods, four screws and a short run of wire is a cheap way to fix a dark plate and a darker tray.
