A breakdown on an unlit shoulder, a work site after knock-off, a boat ramp with no power within a hundred metres — anywhere you need to be seen and there is nothing to plug into. This warning light runs entirely off its own solar panel, so there is no loom to run through a firewall and no battery to swap out.

Charges by day, runs through the night

The panel tops up an internal 18650 lithium cell, 3.7 V and 1200 mAh, which is supplied with the unit. The supplier states that eight to ten hours of daylight brings it to full charge, and that a full charge gives around 50 hours of continuous running — enough to cover several nights without decent sun. A light sensor does the switching, so it wakes at dusk and shuts itself down at dawn. Eight surface-mount LED beads do the work, and the supplier quotes a visible distance of 500 m.

Sits on steel or bolts down hard

The base carries an iron loop that grips a steel surface, which is what lets the unit move between a tray, a roof rack and a plant guard in seconds. Where it has to stay put, there are fixing holes 10 cm apart taking 5 mm screws, although the screws themselves are not supplied. The housing is moulded from PC and ABS, and at roughly 440 g on a 12.8 cm base it sits only 9.5 cm proud — low enough to clear a branch on a bush track. A single button handles on and off.
