A factory high-mount brake light is often one small lens buried in the parcel shelf, and behind a boot packed with camping gear it can be almost hidden. A strip stretched across the full width of the rear glass gives the driver behind something far harder to miss the moment you touch the pedal — which is the whole point of a third brake light.

144 LEDs across the full width of the glass

The strip carries 144 individual LEDs over 35 inches (roughly 89 cm), spreading the light along the whole run instead of concentrating it in one hot spot. It is a red output wired to the brake circuit — black to earth, red to the brake feed — so it lights only under braking, not as a constant tail lamp. If the strip is longer than your rear screen, the supplier says it can be shortened at every third LED, so a narrower car doesn't rule it out.

Silicone that keeps its shape in the heat

The strip is moulded in soft silicone rather than rigid plastic. That lets it follow the curve of a rear windscreen, and it rolls up for storage when it isn't fitted. It also matters through an Australian summer, when the air behind the glass gets brutally hot: the supplier states the strip will not get too hot in prolonged use and rates the LEDs at more than 50,000 hours of service. Fitting is double-sided tape onto the inside of the glass, with no holes to drill.

Before you fit these

• This is an additional rear lamp. Position, colour and use of rear lighting are regulated and vary by state — confirm the requirements that apply to your vehicle and state before fitting for road use.
• Wire it to the brake circuit only. Running it as a constant tail lamp changes what the light signals to the driver behind you.
• The supplier's own text gives the length as both 35 feet and 35 inches. The product title and the specification line both say 35 inches, which is the figure used here — measure your rear screen before ordering.
• Clean and dry the glass properly before sticking it down. Adhesive tape does not get a second attempt on a dusty screen.

Suits most 12 V cars, utes, vans, 4WDs and campervans. The strip can be shortened but not extended, so measure first.
