Four strips already joined up

The strips arrive linked by a single harness, so there is no soldering and no chaining of modules under the dash. Adhesive backing is fitted, the cable runs cross a cabin comfortably, and the strips are slim enough to tuck under seat rails and along the footwell lip, where light spills onto the floor rather than into your eyes. Power comes from the car charger socket at 5 V, so nothing needs cutting into the vehicle's loom.

Eight colours, and a mic that drives them

The handset covers eight fixed colours plus two jump modes, two fade modes and four music modes. In music mode the microphone picks up sound inside the cabin and shifts colour with the rhythm — it responds to the room rather than to a paired audio stream, so the radio or a phone speaker works equally well. A memory function restores the last setting at start-up, and the controller carries short-circuit protection.

Before you fit these

• Restrictions apply to the colour of light visible from outside a vehicle while it is being driven, and they vary by state. Mounting the strips low in the footwell keeps the light inside the cabin — confirm the requirements that apply to your vehicle and state before use on the road.
• The handset is infrared, so it needs line of sight to the control box. Work out where that box will live before committing the adhesive.
• The supplier claims this lighting increases driving safety. Nothing in its data substantiates that, so the claim is not repeated here — treat the strips as interior ambience.
