Fit LED indicators to a car built around filament globes and the flasher starts running at roughly double speed, or the dash throws a globe-out warning. Nothing has actually failed. The car is simply reading the much smaller current an LED draws and concluding a globe has died.

Putting the load back on the circuit

A load resistor wires in parallel across the indicator, drawing the extra current the vehicle's flasher unit or body module expects from a filament globe. With that load restored, the flash rate settles back to normal and the warning clears. These are 6 ohm units rated at 50 W. The supplier's note is that each LED globe needs one or more resistors but does not say which vehicles need more than one, so plan on one per globe and confirm the result before everything goes back together.

Alloy case built to shed heat

A resistor does its job by converting surplus current into heat, and a 50 W unit gets genuinely hot while the indicator is running. Before you fit these

• These run hot. The supplier's instruction is not to place them next to plastic or flammable material, and not to touch them while the LED is lit. Mount them on bare metal, clear of looms, trim and fuel lines.
• Two resistors cover one pair of indicators. Work out how many circuits you are converting before ordering.
• This is a modification to the indicator wiring on your vehicle. Check what is required for your make, model and state before the car goes back on the road.
• Take care during installation and disconnect the battery before working on the circuit.
