Hazard lights were designed to be read from behind at low speed, not from an angle on a dark road shoulder. Surface-mount strobes fill that gap. Each of these is a sealed aluminium bar 11 cm long that mounts flush to a bumper, guard or tray edge and throws a hard yellow flash across the traffic lane.

The housing is aluminium rather than moulded plastic, and on a strobe that is a thermal decision more than a structural one. LEDs shed output and life when the junction runs hot, so a metal shell pulls heat off the six chips and dumps it into the airflow. The supplier quotes an average 50,000 hour life on that basis, and specifies Samsung chips. At 50 g and 11 x 2.8 cm per light, there is very little to find room for.

Eighteen patterns that stay put

Flash pattern does more for getting noticed than raw brightness. There are 18 modes here, and a power-off memory that holds the last one selected, so a light on a switched circuit wakes up in the pattern you left it in instead of reverting to first in the list. Response is quoted in microseconds, with none of the warm-up a filament needs. Supply runs from 12 V to 24 V, covering cars, motorcycles and light trucks on one part number.

Before you fit these

• Use of flashing and strobing lights is restricted in Australia and generally limited to authorised vehicles or off-road and private property use. Check what applies to your own vehicle and your own state before fitting one for road use.
• IPX-4 covers splashing water from any direction. The X means dust ingress is not rated, and the figure does not cover pressure washing or submersion.
• The supplier does not say whether 18 W is per light or for the full set, so size wiring and fusing on the higher assumption.
