A brake light that has stopped working is one of the few faults you cannot see from the driver's seat. You find out from a fine, or from someone behind you leaning on the horn. This is a plain 3157 replacement globe: the dual-filament wedge type used for combined tail and brake duty on older imported vehicles.

One globe, two filaments

The 3157, also coded P27/7W, carries two filaments inside one envelope on a plastic wedge base with wide flat pins. The low filament runs the tail or parking light; the high one fires when the brake pedal goes down or the indicator flashes. That is why the base has two contacts, and why a single-filament globe in its place leaves a tail light that never brightens.

Krypton fill and quartz glass

Instead of plain argon, the envelope carries a krypton gas mixture. The heavier gas slows tungsten evaporating off the hot filament, which is the basis for the supplier's claimed life of up to 1,000 hours. The glass is anti-UV quartz, chosen to cope with the heat a filament throws rather than for appearance.

Check what is already in the socket

The supplier lists this globe against a spread of Jeep, Dodge, Ford and Nissan models, then prints a cross-reference running to 3057, 3457, 4057, 4157 and dozens more. Those lists are keyword-heavy and mix US-market naming. The only check worth trusting is the globe in the socket now: pull it, read the code moulded into the base, and order only if it says 3157 or P27/7W.
