There is a point on a station track, somewhere past midnight, where the difference between a good run and a slow crawl is simply how far ahead you can see. This is a 28-inch quad row bar built around a lot of small diodes rather than a handful of big ones, and the supplier puts it at 22,420 lumens.

Why four rows of one-watt diodes

216 Philips Lumileds emitters, each rated 1 W, sit in four stacked rows behind the reflectors. Splitting the output across many small sources instead of a few large ones spreads the heat over a wider area of the casting, and a single failed diode barely dents the beam. It also makes the light face taller, which is where the wide part of the pattern comes from. Colour temperature is 5700 K — near-white, so signage and track edges keep their colour instead of turning muddy.

Heat and current are what actually limit a bar

The face plate is cast A360 aluminium on an extruded heat sink, and at 3.5 kg most of that weight is metal doing thermal work. Draw is 9.1 A at 12 V, halving to 4.55 A on a 24 V truck, so it belongs on its own relayed and fused circuit rather than spliced into an existing accessory feed. Input is 9-32 V, which covers a 12 V ute with a tired battery and a heavy vehicle system alike. Sealing is IP68 and the rated operating range is -20°C to 50°C.

Before you fit these

• Positioning, covers and wiring requirements apply to light bars. Confirm what applies to your vehicle and your state before using it on road.
• At 9.1 A on 12 V this needs a relay, an appropriately rated fuse and cable sized for the run — not a tap into an existing circuit.
• A 28-inch bar is a real load on a bull bar or roof rack. Check the mount is rated for the weight and the leverage before drilling.
