Bogged to the axles in soft sand, a bottle jack just screws itself into the ground. An exhaust jack works the other way: a nylon bag under the chassis inflates off your own tailpipe, spreading its footprint as it fills so the load pushes down over a wide area instead of a single small pad.

One minute of idling and it is up

There is no pumping and no jack handle. The supplied inflation joint clamps to the tailpipe, 6 m (20 ft) of exhaust hose runs back to the bag, and the supplier says filling takes about a minute. That hose length is the useful part — long enough to reach a rear bag from a front pipe, or to keep whoever is operating it well away from the vehicle as it rises. Drive is listed as manual, meaning there is no pump or compressor in the kit: engine exhaust is the only air source, so the vehicle has to be running.

Where a rigid jack has nothing to push against

The supplier's claim here is specific: the jack works on hard ground and on sand, mud and snow. That is the whole reason it exists. A rigid jack needs a firm base and a flat pad; a bag does not care, because it grows to fill the space between the ground and the chassis and takes its bearing from whatever surface it lands on. Two protective blankets come in the kit to sit between the bag and the vehicle, which is what stops it sliding off a rounded chassis rail or catching on an exhaust bracket. Material is 1000 denier nylon.

Sold as ten units

This listing is a ten-unit pack, not a single jack — the title, the supplier's SKU and the closing line all say ten. That makes it a fleet or club buy: recovery outfits, tag-along tour operators, mine site vehicle pools, resellers. One caveat on the contents, and it is the supplier's ambiguity rather than ours: the pack list is written in the singular, for one jack with one bag, hose, joint, gloves, glue, two blankets and two patches. Whether every accessory is supplied ten times over is not stated. Ask before you order if the accessory count matters.

Safety — read before use

• An exhaust jack lifts, it does not hold. Once the wheel or chassis is up, support the vehicle on rated stands or solid blocking and confirm they are carrying the weight before anyone goes underneath.
• The 5 tons figure is per stand, quoted as the supplier states it. Do not add the ten units together, and do not read it as a rating for the pack.
• Keep everyone clear while the bag inflates. A bag can shift or roll out from under a chassis as it grows, and it lets go quickly if it is punctured.
• Clear sharp edges, exhaust brackets and hot components from the contact area, and use the supplied blankets between the bag and the vehicle.
• The engine has to run to inflate it, so exhaust gas is being pushed around the vehicle. Keep out of the fumes and never do this in an enclosed space.
• No standard, certification or test rating is named by the supplier for these jacks.

Recovery gear for the ground where a conventional jack is useless. Buy it as a pack for a fleet, and pair every one with a set of rated stands.
