A 4500 lb winch is the sweet spot for boat trailers, ATVs and light recovery work — enough pull to drag a bogged quad or wind a boat onto a trailer, without the weight and current draw of a full-size 4WD unit. This one runs a 12V permanent-magnet motor through three stages of planetary reduction, so it pulls steadily rather than in surges.

Three-stage planetary gearing

The 198:1 reduction is what turns a 1.9 HP motor into 2,041 kg of line pull. Three planetary stages share the load across multiple gear sets instead of hanging it all on one, which keeps the drive smooth under tension and makes the winch far more tolerant of long, slow pulls than a worm-drive unit. A two-way free spool clutch lets you pull line out by hand while you're setting up, rather than fighting the motor.

All-steel housing and a 500 A solenoid

The steel shell is finished in black textured paint, and the diamond pattern cast into the gearbox is there to shed heat during sustained pulls. Just as important is the 500 A solenoid. An undersized relay is the most common failure point on a budget winch, and running one properly rated to the motor is what stops it cooking itself on the third recovery of the day.

Wired and wireless control

Both remotes are in the box. The corded big-grip handset is the one you'll use standing at the drum; the wireless unit lets you stand clear of the line, or work the winch from the driver's seat while you feed throttle. Braking is mechanical, so the load holds as soon as you release the button.
