Getting a generator or a gearbox into a ute tray on your own usually ends with a hire truck or a favour owed. A swivel crane bolted to the tray turns it into a one-person job: lift off the ground, swing it over the side, lower it in.

Read the boom position before the headline number

900 kg is the supplier's figure with the boom retracted. Extended, the rating drops, and the supplier states that reduced figure two different ways: 225 kg in one place, 450 kg in another. We will not publish either as fact. The principle holds regardless: the further out a load hangs on a telescopic boom, the less the crane takes. Set the arm to the position marked on the unit and treat its plate as the authority.

Bolted down first, then it swings

The base plate measures 27 × 27 cm with eight mounting holes, which lets it fix hard to a ute tray, a trailer deck or a workshop frame. Once down, the head rotates a full 360°, so a load comes up one side and goes down the other with nobody handling it mid-air. A manual hydraulic pump does the lifting, and the arm telescopes from 100 cm to 140 cm to reach past a tray side.

Before you take a load

• Use all eight mounting holes, into structure rated for the load. Tray floors vary and no fixings or substrate are specified.
• Capacity falls as the boom extends, and the supplier's extended figure is inconsistent. Never assume 900 kg at full reach.
• The crane holds a load on hydraulic pressure; it is not a support. Nobody works under a suspended load, and anything worked on goes onto rated stands first.
• No standard, certification or test rating is named by the supplier.
