A diesel that smokes under load and idles rough is usually telling you an injector has had enough, but finding which one means pulling the lot and guessing. This pop tester puts a figure on each: opening pressure, seat leakage, chatter and spray pattern, checked on the bench.

One gauge, two scales, 60 MPa

The 100 mm dial carries both scales side by side, marked 0-600 bar and 0-8000 psi, with a maximum test pressure of 60 MPa. That covers the opening pressures used on conventional mechanical injectors. The gauge body is stainless and the pump body aluminium for rigidity, so the lever is not flexing and blurring the reading. The connection is a standard 3/8 inch BSP thread.

What the four tests tell you

Opening pressure shows whether the nozzle still lifts where it should. The leakage test holds it just below that point and looks for weeping at the seat. Chatter, the buzz a healthy nozzle makes as the needle cycles, says the needle moves freely rather than sticking. Spray pattern shows atomisation: a fine even mist rather than a dribble. Together they decide whether an injector goes back in or in the bin.

Before you test an injector

• Not for common rail: the supplier states the kit suits all types of diesel injector except CRDI common rail injectors.
• No accuracy tolerance is published and it is not supplied calibrated, so read results as comparative unless independently checked.
• Fuel at these pressures is not something to put a hand near. Use it alongside correct workshop procedure, not in place of it.
