Looking down at the speedometer costs a second of road, and on a country highway that second covers a fair distance. This head-up display plugs into the OBD2 port and throws speed onto the lower windscreen in 2.5 cm digits, roughly in line with the road ahead.

Readable in glare, gentle at night

A photosensitive cell measures ambient light and trims brightness continuously, which is the difference between a display washed out by afternoon sun and one that wrecks your night vision at 11pm. The front face carries a metal nano coating to cut stray reflections, and a shading hood is moulded in. An optional reflective film is included for windscreens where the raw projection is not crisp enough.

Five alarms, and what they depend on

Alongside speed, the unit can flag overspeed, system voltage, coolant temperature, a stored fault, and a fatigue reminder after a long stint at the wheel. Which of those work on a given car depends on what that vehicle reports over OBD2, and coolant temperature in particular is not published by every model. Treat it as a display for data the car already broadcasts, not a diagnostic tool: it does not code, program or reach manufacturer-specific systems.

Before you plug it in

• The supplier states compatibility with most cars fitted with an OBD2 port, generally those built after 2008, and lists start-stop, hybrid and petrol vehicles. Confirm your car has the port, and expect functions to be vehicle-dependent.
• Set the alarm thresholds from the manual before relying on them, and mount it clear of your view.
