Not every engine gives you a sump plug you can reach. Undertrays, low clearance and no ramps turn a fifteen minute oil change into an afternoon of jacking and crawling. Pulling the oil up through the dipstick tube sidesteps all of that, and this one will do it with an air line or with nothing but your arm.

Two ways to build vacuum

Connect shop air, open the valve and press the button: the unit draws until the 7 litre chamber is full, then shuts off by itself so there is nothing to spill. Without a compressor, the vacuum handle does the same work by hand, four to six strokes being enough to start the draw. That is what makes the tool as useful in a driveway as in a workshop bay.

Not only engine oil

The supplier rates it for engine oil, gear oil, coolant, power steering fluid and brake fluid, from cars, motorcycles, marine and stationary engines and industrial machinery. Low viscosity fluids such as water are also covered, which is why the same unit ends up emptying fish tanks and blocked sinks. Three probe diameters come with it, one for a dipstick tube and a finer one for brake work.

Before you use it

• Work with the engine turned off, as the supplier's instructions state.
• Set the locking clamp so the extraction tube reaches the bottom of the oil pan. A short tube leaves oil behind.
• Close the drain valve on the unit before pumping, or the vacuum will not hold.
• Brake fluid and coolant are not interchangeable with oil. Flush or dedicate a probe rather than cross-contaminating a system.

Worth a place on the shelf if you service your own cars, bikes or boat, and doubly so if any of them make the sump plug hard to get at.
