A 200 litre drum of oil is not something you tip. Full, it outweighs the person trying to move it, and decanting a few litres by hand ends with fluid running down the side of the drum and across the floor. A rotary pump screws into the bung and makes that a handle you wind.

Each turn of the crank shifts up to 44 litres a minute, so filling a 20 litre container takes seconds rather than minutes. No lead, no battery, nothing to charge. The rotary vane moves oil the moment winding starts and stops the moment it ends, which gives far finer control over the last litre than a siphon manages. A gooseneck spout hangs over the lip of whatever is being filled and keeps the flow aimed where it belongs.

Two kilos of chrome-plated alloy

The body is aluminium alloy with a chromeplate finish, which is why the assembly weighs 2 kg instead of the five or six a cast iron equivalent would. That matters: the pump hangs off the drum bung on its own threaded rotary joint, and a lighter body is kinder to that thread over years of being screwed in and out. At 126 cm the tube reaches the base of a standard drum, so the last litres come up as readily as the first.

• The supplier states this pump is for lubricating oil and other non-corrosive liquids, and specifically warns against using it with water or corrosive liquids.
• The supplier does not state petrol compatibility and gives no explosion-safety or spark rating. Do not assume it suits petrol; check the manufacturer's instructions first.
• It is designed for 200 litre drums. The supplier does not rate it for other containers.
• Decant fuel outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, away from ignition sources and with no smoking nearby, and bond or earth metal containers before transferring.
