Putting a tap partway along a hose run turns a messy job into a tidy one. Shut the flow at the valve, pull the fitting apart, and the rest of the system stays full instead of emptying onto the ground. This mini ball valve does that with a barbed tail at each end, so it slips into hose already in place.
The alloy in the body, and the different alloy in the handle
316 stainless is what the supplier leads on, and its comparison is drawn against brass and 304 stainless: better corrosion resistance, more ductility at raised temperatures, lower magnetic permeability. The first of those is the reason 316 turns up on boats and anywhere salt gets carried in the air. Worth noticing, though, is that the handles are a separate material — heavy-duty aluminium alloy, in the supplier's words — so the corrosion argument covers the valve body rather than every part of the assembly. Aluminium and stainless in contact, outdoors and wet, is a pairing to keep an eye on over time.
Ninety degrees between open and shut
The lever swings through a quarter turn from fully open to fully closed, which is the practical advantage a ball valve holds over a screw-down tap: nothing to count, and the position of the handle reports the state of the line from across the shed. The supplier also describes a double-seal arrangement that lets flow travel in either direction, so the valve does not need to be installed facing a set way. That is genuinely useful to know before cutting into a hose, because a directional valve fitted backwards is a job done twice.
Key features
- Barbed both ends: pushes into hose and clamps, with no threading or adaptors involved.
- Quarter-turn lever: open or shut in one movement, and readable at a glance.
- Bi-directional: the supplier's double-seal design means orientation is not fixed.
- 316 stainless body: the grade the supplier names, chosen over brass and 304 for corrosion.
- Compact body: small enough to sit inline without needing the hose re-routed.
Specifications
- Body material: 316 stainless steel
- Handle material: aluminium alloy, per the supplier
- Connection: hose barb at both ends
- Barb size, per the title: 5/16" hose ID
- Barb size, per the description: 8.5 mm (0.334") hose ID — this does not match the title figure
- Working temperature: -39°F to 380°F, exactly as published; no Celsius equivalent is given
- Operation: quarter-turn on/off
- Seal: double-seal, described as allowing flow in either direction
- Pressure rating: not published
- Quantity: 1 valve; a single version is stocked, so there is no size or finish to choose
Before you plumb it into a line
- No pressure rating is published for this valve, in any unit. Where a line has a working pressure to meet, this listing does not tell you whether the valve meets it.
- A barb holds only as well as the clamp behind it. Hose selection, clamp selection and the pressure rating of the finished assembly are the installer's responsibility, not the valve's.
- The two barb sizes above disagree. Measure the internal diameter of your hose before ordering rather than working from either figure alone.
- The temperature range is published in Fahrenheit only and carries no stated basis. Nothing has been converted here.
- The supplier lists irrigation, piping, and oil and gas supply among its applications, and the title adds marine water, gas, fuel and aquarium use. Those are the supplier's claims; no fluid compatibility testing is named for any of them.
A small stainless inline shut-off, with the figures the supplier gives and the ones it does not both set out plainly.
