What the magnet adds

Not everything in old fuel is dirt. Rust off a tank wall and fine wear metal are ferrous, and a magnet pulls those particles out of the flow and holds them rather than letting them load up the media. The filter paper then spends its life catching sand, sediment and gum, so the element lasts longer between changes.
