Headers sitting a few centimetres from a plug boot will cook it. The jacket hardens, then it cracks, and the spark starts finding earth somewhere other than the electrode. This is sleeving sold by the roll: ten feet of it, an inch across, cut to whatever lengths your engine bay actually needs.

Sold as a roll, so you choose the lengths

Eight pre-cut boots suit a stock V8 and nothing else. A roll does not care — 150 mm for a boot sitting close to a collector, a metre for a hose running alongside a manifold, whatever the layout demands. Ten feet (3.05 m) at one inch (25.4 mm) diameter covers a full set of leads on most engines with material spare for a cable or a section of loom. Slide it on from the wide end and work it down over the boot or hose.

Two layers of what the supplier calls titanium

Construction is described as two layers of high-temperature titanium material. Doubling the wall is what does the work: the outer face takes radiant heat off the manifold and the space between the layers slows what reaches the wire inside. The stated purpose is to stop lead jackets burning through, hardening and cracking where they pass close to a header or exhaust manifold. No weave, wall thickness, weight or coating specification appears anywhere, so the description of the material is the supplier's own and nothing more.

The temperature figure, exactly as published

The supplier states the sleeving withstands heat up to 2500 degrees intermittent. It does not say whether that number is Fahrenheit or Celsius. It is reproduced here exactly as written and left unconverted, because the two readings are worlds apart and guessing between them would be worse than saying nothing at all. The one thing stated clearly is the basis: intermittent exposure. No continuous working temperature is published anywhere.

Before it goes on the engine

• The title lists fuel line among the uses. Sleeving a fuel line changes nothing about the line itself — a perished, chafed or wrongly rated hose is still a fuel leak waiting to happen and must be replaced, not wrapped.
• No fire rating, flame test or standard is named by the supplier, and none is claimed here. Do not treat this as fire protection.
• Sleeving cuts radiant heat. It is no substitute for correct clearance between exhaust components and anything flammable.
• Work with the engine cold, and check that sleeved leads and hoses still clear the manifold and every moving part once everything is back together.

Cut what you need, slide it on, and give the leads nearest the headers a fighting chance.
