A nail found on a Saturday morning, thirty minutes from home, is the kind of thing that ruins a plan rather than a tyre. Twenty screw-in plugs and the screwdriver to drive them live in a box small enough for a console bin, and they exist for one purpose: getting a wheel holding air again long enough to reach a tyre shop.
Match the plug to the hole, not the other way round
Two diameters come in the box. The small plug measures 0.21 x 0.46 in (roughly 5.3 x 11.7 mm) and suits the narrow wound a nail, screw or staple leaves. The large one, at 0.27 x 0.5 in (about 6.9 x 12.7 mm), is for something wider. Choosing by eye and going a size up "just in case" is the usual mistake, since an oversized plug stretches the hole it is meant to fill. Look at what came out of the tyre, then pick.
A thick thread and an iron core
Each plug is rubber moulded over an iron core, which is what allows it to be turned through tread rubber without folding. The thread is deliberately coarse: the supplier's reasoning is that the extra depth increases friction against the tyre and closes the seal without the tyre coming off the rim and without a reaming tool. That is the whole appeal of a screw-in plug on the roadside, where a full plug kit means a rasp, a needle and both hands.
Key features
- Twenty plugs per kit: enough for a car, a trailer and a bike over several seasons.
- Screwdriver included: nothing else has to be found before the repair starts.
- Two diameters supplied: a fine and a coarse plug in the same box.
- Storage case: keeps plugs clean in a boot or toolbox instead of loose in a drawer.
- Rim stays on the car: the tyre does not need to come off the wheel to fit one.

Before you fit these
- A screw-in plug is a temporary roadside repair. It gets the wheel turning so you can reach help, and nothing about it returns the tyre to its original condition.
- Where the supplier's listing talks about long-lasting performance and preventing air leaks on various road surfaces, that is the supplier's own claim with no test basis published behind it.
- Get the wheel to a tyre shop at the first opportunity. Only a qualified fitter can judge whether the casing is sound and whether the tyre is fit to keep using.
- Until that has happened, drive gently, stay off the freeway and keep the vehicle lightly laden.
Worth having in the boot before the nail turns up rather than after.
