The adjustment is what this tester is sold on, and it is given two different names here and never a number. It uses the word pitch three times, calls the same thing the spark gap elsewhere, says to set it according to the needs of different car models, and then identifies not one of those models and no setting for any of them.
Two names for one knob
A round knob, and a part the description calls a pitch adjustment valve, open and close the gap the spark has to jump. Pitch is not the word a workshop would use for that, and the same paragraph that introduces it never connects it to the spark gap the tool later tells you to read. If you have not met this tool before, the two halves of its own description are describing one control.
Doing the test is the easy part
The procedure is three steps and all three work: clip the alligator lead to the engine, connect the other end to the spark plug lead, and watch the spark through the small window. A rubber-coated earth lead and springs are described as carrying the high voltage safely. Reading the result is where the page stops helping: the rule it gives is that a longer spark means a stronger coil, with no length, no reading and no threshold to compare against.
Key features
- Gap you can change: a knob and an adjuster open the spark gap rather than fixing it at one width.
- Viewing window: the spark is watched through a small window rather than inferred from the engine.
- White scale markings: the description says the scale values are in white so they stay readable in bright light.
- Insulated earth lead: a rubber-coated ground wire with alligator clips, described as making the connection stable.
- Metal contacts: the connectors are metal, which the description ties to conductivity rather than to strength alone.
- Pocket-sized body: 4.5 inches overall on a 19.7 inch lead, so it reaches from a plug lead to an earth point.
Specifications

- Body across: 0.92 inches
- Scale range: 0 to 40k, as printed
- Earth connection: rubber-coated wire with alligator clips and springs
- Gap control: round knob and adjuster, described as setting the observation pitch
Read this before you trust a reading
- The scale is described as running from 0 to 40k, and 40k of what is never stated. No unit is printed for it anywhere: not kilovolts, not volts, not ohms, not millimetres. We have published the figure exactly as it stands and have not written a unit into it.
- Nothing says what reading counts as a pass or a fail. The only interpretive rule offered is that a longer spark means a stronger coil, which compares your engine with itself and with nothing else.
- The instruction is to set the adjustment according to different car models. Not one of those models is identified here, and no recommended setting is offered for any of them.
- This listing carries not a single warning, on a tool whose stated job is carrying ignition voltage. Nothing about shock, nothing about gloves, nothing about keeping clear, and no figure for the voltage it will see.
- The applications sentence has the same word damaged twice, in both places where maintenance belongs. That sentence has not been restated in the supplier's own wording; what survives of it is small engines, ignition coils and mowers.
- The three dimensions are imperial only, with no millimetre equivalent beside any of them, and each is printed as an absolute, unqualified by any range.
- Nothing gives the plug thread or boot size the tester connects to, and nothing says whether it suits coil-on-plug systems as well as separate plug leads. The search summary promises a no-guess diagnostic tool. With an unlabelled scale and no threshold, the description backs none of that up.
- How many testers arrive is never stated, though the whole page is written in the singular.
A go or no-go check you can do at the kerb, which will show you a spark and leave the judging of it entirely to you.
