Rubber Drain Plug Snap Handle

What sets this one apart from a plain twist plug is the handle: it snaps down and locks the seal in place.

The snap handle locks the squeeze in

Twist bungs depend on you having left them tight enough. This design adds a cam. The plug goes into the drain, the handle turns clockwise to take up the slack, and then the handle snaps flat and holds the rubber under compression. Nothing is relying on friction alone to stay done up, and a handle lying flat is something you can read from across the deck without kneeling down to feel it. Lifting the handle unlocks the cam, and an anti-clockwise turn backs the plug out.

Brass in the handle

The handle is solid brass, the plug body rubber. Brass does not rust, which is the whole argument for it in a fitting that spends its working life wet. The practical difference shows up two seasons in, when a plated steel handle has swollen with corrosion and will no longer fold flat, while a brass one still moves through its full travel. The rubber body carries the sealing job; the metal only has to keep working the cam.

• Measure the internal bore of your drain. This plug is quoted at 1 inch; the twist-handle version sold separately is 1-1/4 inch, and the two are not interchangeable.
• Push the handle fully flat every time. A cam left part-closed will hold the plug in the hole without sealing it.
• Look over the rubber for splits and flat spots at the start of each season, and replace a perished plug rather than winding a tired one down harder.
