Scupper holes are a fine idea right up until you're sitting in a slow trickle of cold water on a flat lake with nothing to drain. Plugging them keeps the seat dry; pulling them out again lets the boat self-drain the moment water starts coming over the side. A set of eight covers both situations.
Dry when you want it, draining when you need it
The trade-off on a sit-on-top is settled by whoever's in the seat, not by the boat. Flat water, cold morning, no chop — plugs in, and the hull stays dry underneath you. Surf, a following sea, or a river run where you're shipping water — plugs out, and the scuppers do the job they were moulded for. These push in and pull out by hand, so that call can be made at the ramp or halfway through a paddle.
Tapered rubber and a finger tab
Each plug is moulded rubber with a taper, so one plug wedges across a range of hole sizes instead of fitting a single diameter. The supplier gives that range as 1 in to 1-3/8 in. The tab on top is what makes them worth having: something to pull on with wet hands, and pre-drilled so each plug can be tethered to a deck fitting. Untethered scupper plugs have a habit of ending up on the bottom of the lake.
Key features
- Eight per set: covers a boat's worth of scuppers with spares left over.
- Tapered profile: one plug suits holes from 1 in to 1-3/8 in rather than one fixed size.
- Pre-drilled finger tab: pull them out with wet hands, and tether them so they don't go overboard.
- Hand fit: in and out without tools, so you can change your mind on the water.

Before you push these in
- Measure your scupper holes. The 1 in to 1-3/8 in range is the only fitment figure published; the brand names are a guide, not a guarantee.
- Tether them through the drilled tabs before the first paddle.
- Plugs in means the hull no longer self-drains. Pull them before surf, whitewater or anything where you expect to take water over the side.
Cheap enough to keep a spare set in the dry bag.
