Bonnet struts get tired long before the rest of the car does, and the first sign is usually the bonnet creeping down onto your head while you are leaning over the engine bay. A strut clamp is the cheap answer to that: it locks the gas strut's rod at whatever height you have pushed the panel to.
How the clamp holds the rod
Each clamp closes around the polished section of a gas strut's rod and tightens onto it, so the strut cannot retract past that point. The supplier specifies a rod of about 0.55 in (14 mm), which covers plenty of bonnet, tailgate and hatch struts but nowhere near all of them — put a vernier across the shiny rod on your own vehicle before ordering. Locking nuts reduce the chance of the setting working loose while you are underneath it.
Alloy rather than steel, four to a pack
They are machined from aluminium alloy, which matters here less for strength than for corrosion: a steel clamp left clipped to a strut through a coastal winter will seize onto the rod and mark it. Four in the pack covers a bonnet and a tailgate, or leaves a spare set in the toolbox. Fitting is by hand — insert, clip on, slide it to the height the job needs — with no drilling and no special tool. The set is finished in blue.
Key features
- Four clamps supplied: covers two struts on two panels, or a spare pair for the workshop.
- Locking nuts: hold the clamp's position rather than relying on friction alone.
- Adjustable height: set wherever the strut is extended to, instead of a single fixed stop.
- Tool-free fitting: clips on and off by hand, no drilling and nothing to modify.
- Aluminium alloy: avoids the surface rust that welds a steel clamp to a strut rod.
Specifications

- Suits rod diameter: approximately 0.55 in (14 mm)
- Material: aluminium alloy
- Colour: blue
- Load rating and clamp dimensions: not published
Before you fit these
- The supplier publishes no load rating for these clamps. Do not rely on them alone to hold a bonnet or tailgate you are working beneath — use a proper prop or support stand as well.
- Measure the strut rod first. On an undersized rod the clamp can slip; on an oversized one it will not close.
- Confirm each clamp is fully seated and tightened before any part of you goes under the panel.
A small workshop aid that pays for itself the first time a strut lets go mid-job. Measure the rod, then order.
