Cords only — bring your own tools

The repair sequence the supplier gives depends on those tools: ream the puncture with the round file, load the cord into the eye of the insertion needle, then push it home. If your puncture kit already has the T-handle tools and you have simply run out of cords, this is the refill. Starting from scratch, you will need the tools as well.

How the repair actually goes

The supplier's own steps are worth following in order. Mark the puncture and pull the nail. Work the hole open with the round tool. Feed the cord halfway through the eye of the insertion tool so both tails sit even. Push it in until roughly 1 to 2 mm of the loop stands proud of the tread, then draw the tool straight back out and leave the cord behind. Trim the ends flush with scissors. Inflate and check for leaks before the tyre goes back into service.

Before you plug a tyre

• The listing calls these essential for tubeless tyres in one line and suitable for all styles of rubber tyre in another. Those two statements do not agree — check what your tyre is before relying on a plug.
• The supplier notes that the cord must pass right through the tyre and be checked once inflated, so that it cannot slip back out under pressure.
• Reinflate to placard pressure and look for bubbles at the plug before driving on it.
• A plug is a get-you-going repair. Have the tyre inspected by a tyre fitter afterwards.
