A boat trailer earth wire that has chafed through on the drawbar is a twenty-minute repair if the right barrel is in the drawer. Cut the damaged section out, strip both ends back, and one 12-10 AWG splice puts the run together again with an insulated sleeve over the join instead of a wrap of tape that lifts by the second launch.
Sized for heavier cable only
Every piece in this pack is the one gauge: 12-10 AWG. There is no red or blue barrel in the bag to grab by mistake, which helps when the whole job is heavy cable and hinders when it is not. Thinner wire dropped into a 12-10 barrel will not be gripped properly, however hard the handles are squeezed. Read the gauge printed on the cable jacket, or measure it, before committing to a single-size pack.
What the sleeve actually does
The tubing is described as dual-walled with a 3:1 shrink and a heat-activated sealant on its inner face. Apply heat and the outer wall draws down while the lining softens and squeezes out along the wire, closing each end. The supplier calls the result waterproof and flame-retardant, and the terminals marine grade. Those are its words rather than measurements: no IP figure, no immersion depth and no flammability standard is quoted behind any of the three.
Key features
- Single gauge, 20 pieces: a small pack aimed at one repair rather than a workshop stock of mixed sizes.
- Insulated barrel: the sleeve covers the crimp itself, so no separate boot or tape is needed over the join.
- 3:1 shrink with sealant lining: the lining flows on heating and pinches onto the wire jacket at both ends.
- No soldering: crimp, then heat — finished with a heat gun instead of an iron.
Specifications
- Quantity: 20 pieces, taken from the title; the description text carries no count of its own
- Wire size: 12-10 AWG
- Sleeve: dual-wall polyolefin with heat-activated sealant, at a 3:1 shrink ratio as the supplier describes it
- Barrel: tinned copper, seamless, on the supplier's description
- "Marine grade" and "waterproof": supplier marketing terms — this listing quotes no IP rating, no immersion figure and no test procedure behind either word
- Electrical ratings: not quoted. Amperage, voltage and operating temperature range are all absent
- Colour, length and barrel dimensions: the supplier leaves these blank
What's in the box
- 20 heat shrink butt connectors in 12-10 AWG
- No crimping tool and no heat gun are supplied
Worth knowing before the crimp
- Use a crimping tool matched to insulated terminals. Ordinary pliers flatten a barrel instead of forming it around the conductor.
- Keep the heat on until adhesive appears at both ends. A shrunk sleeve is not automatically a sealed one.
- Load, fuse rating and cable selection are yours to work out; no guidance on any of them is offered here or in the supplier's copy. Splices into a vehicle's own wiring are work for a qualified auto electrician.
Twenty pieces suits a single repair or a spare set kept in the tow vehicle. If the work runs across several gauges, compare the per-piece cost against a mixed kit before ordering.
