Chasing an intermittent electrical fault usually ends at an earth. A corroded strap between the engine and the chassis does not fail cleanly; it adds resistance, and the symptoms turn up somewhere else entirely, as a dim headlight, a slow crank or a sensor reading that makes no sense.
Why the braid is flat and not round
These are flat braided straps rather than solid cable, and the shape is deliberate. An engine moves on its mounts constantly, so anything bridging it to the body is flexed thousands of times a day. Fine wires woven into a flat braid distribute that movement across the whole section instead of concentrating it where a solid conductor exits a terminal, which is exactly where a solid earth cable eventually breaks. The supplier states the braid is 1/2 inch wide and that the fine wires are evenly woven, and credits the construction with letting the strap bend through large angles and run cool.
The numbers on the label, and the one that is missing
Length is 20 inches, the terminal mounting holes are 5/16 inch in diameter, and the supplier states a rating of 62 amps. That rating is published here exactly as given, with no standard, duty cycle or test method named against it, so treat it as the supplier's claim. What is absent is the conductor size: no gauge, no AWG number and no cross-sectional area appears anywhere in the data. Since the current a strap can safely carry follows from its section, that gap matters, and no figure has been inferred here from the width or the amp rating.
Key features
- Twelve straps: enough to renew every earth point on a vehicle in one go.
- Tinned copper braid: the tin plating slows the corrosion that raises resistance.
- Flat braided form: flexes with engine movement instead of fatiguing at the terminal.
- 5/16 inch terminal holes: the bolt size to check against your own earth points.
- 20 inches long: one length across the pack, cut to nothing and trimmed by you.
Specifications
- Quantity: 12 straps
- Length: 20 inches
- Braid width: 1/2 inch
- Terminal hole diameter: 5/16 inch
- Current rating: 62 amps, the supplier's stated figure, no standard or duty cycle named
- Conductor: braided tinned copper
- Colour: silver, per the product title
- Wire gauge, AWG or cross-sectional area: none published
- Named vehicles: the supplier lists no make, model or year
- Stated uses: engine block to chassis earthing, ignition, starting and charging circuits, body electrical and lighting, engine fuel management, plus industrial, transformer, machinery, switchboard and building earthing
Before you fit these
- The 62 amp figure is the supplier's, published with nothing behind it. No gauge is given, so that rating cannot be checked, and none has been worked back from the braid width. Where a circuit's earth carries real current, size the conductor to the vehicle manufacturer's specification instead.
- No vehicle is named anywhere in the supplier's data. The word universal is its own, and no fitment is claimed here for any make or model. Check the length and the 5/16 inch hole against your own mounting points.
- Disconnect the battery before touching any earth. On a fuel-injected engine a poor or missing earth pushes return current down whatever path it can find, including fuel lines and control cables, so make sure the mating faces are clean bare metal and the bolt is properly tight.
- Never rely on one of these as a starter or charging earth unless you have confirmed the conductor is adequate for that duty.
Twelve straps, four published measurements, and one specification the supplier has left off the sheet.
