Where DT earns its keep

DT is what people reach for when a joint has to live somewhere hostile: an engine bay, a chassis rail, a trailer harness, a driving light loom on a 4WD. The series is environmentally sealed, with a silicone rubber grommet at the wire entry and thermoplastic shells, so damp, vibration and temperature swing do not do to it what they do to a twisted-and-taped joint. Listed applications run to engine and transmission wiring, under-bonnet systems, chassis and frame runs, in-cab electronics and heavy-duty circuits.

Size 16 stamped contacts, and the tool they demand

Every contact here is size 16, stamped rather than machined, in nickel-plated copper alloy. Size 16 is the standard DT contact and suits the larger wire gauges the series was built around. The part most people underestimate is the crimp. Stamped DT contacts want a proper DT crimping tool on the correct selector setting; squeezed with pliers or a generic ratchet die, a joint can pass a bench tug and then let go six months later on a corrugated track. An intermittent fault in a vibrating loom is far harder to chase than an outright open circuit.

Before you crimp any of these

• Use a genuine DT crimping tool. Stamped size 16 contacts are unforgiving of the wrong die, and a poor crimp is the failure point in anything that shakes.
• Fill every unused cavity with a sealing plug. An open cavity is a straight water path into the back of the housing.
• Seat the wedge lock fully home. Without that click, a contact can back out of the housing under load.
• No current rating and no wire gauge range are published for this assortment, so size circuits from the cable and the fuse rather than from the connector.
• Anything spliced into charging, lighting or safety circuits is worth having checked by a competent auto electrician before it carries load.
