Tyre dressing has a habit of ending up everywhere except the tyre: down the sidewall, across the wheel face, and all over your fingers. A flat sponge only touches the rubber along one narrow line. These contoured pads are cut with a wave profile that sits into the curve of a sidewall instead.

A wave profile that follows the sidewall

The moulded wave pattern is the whole point of the pad. It presses against the shoulder and the flat of the tyre at once, so dressing goes down in a single pass rather than three, and far less of it runs off onto the wheel or the driveway. The supplier's stated claim is that this reduces drips and staining. Hands also stay clear of the dressing, which matters more with the glossy solvent-based products.

Durafoam that holds dressing instead of drinking it

Cheap sponges soak up dressing and hand it back in uneven blobs. The high-density foam here, which the supplier calls Durafoam, is described as holding product on the surface rather than absorbing it, so a small amount goes further and the finish comes out even.
