Six flats instead of a slippery round puck

The body is a hexagonal block. Those flat sides give your fingers something to brace against, which is why the supplier rates it as less likely to slip away mid-stroke than a smooth round applicator — the usual annoyance once your hands are coated. The foam bends freely and springs back when released, so you can fold it to reach behind spokes or into the gap where tyre meets rim. It is open-cell, which is what lets water pass through and rinse the old dressing out.

• Keep dressing off the tread — it belongs on the sidewall only.
• Follow the label and safety data sheet of whichever dressing you are applying; wear gloves if it directs you to.
• Wash the pad out between different products so a solvent-based dressing does not carry into a water-based one.
