Working on a battery

• Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. That is what stops a spanner touching bodywork and shorting the positive through itself.
• A loose or corroded terminal is a heat and fire risk, not just a starting problem. Pull the clamp up properly and check it again after a few days of driving.
• Batteries vent flammable gas and contain acid. Eye protection, no naked flame, and follow the battery manufacturer's instructions.
