Running a generator dry at 2am, or topping up a boat from a can balanced on one knee, is how you end up wearing the fuel. This pump does the lifting, and a built-in sensor cuts the motor the moment the receiving tank fills or fuel flows back up the hose.

The sensor does the watching

The auto-stop sensor tracks the transfer as it happens. When the receiving tank fills, or fuel begins flowing back toward the can, the pump shuts down on its own rather than pushing until something spills. That matters most when the filler neck sits out of sight, under a bonnet or down in a boat well. The 51-inch hose, 129.5 cm, lets the supply can stay flat on the ground instead of being tipped over the opening.

Four AA cells and no cord

No lead to run, no outlet to find. The supplier recommends four AA batteries for best performance, with two as an emergency fallback at reduced output; none are supplied. Battery life is quoted oddly in the source, as 50 x 5 fuel gallons on four cells and 25 x 5 on two, and it is reproduced here as written rather than guessed at.

Before you start pumping

• The three adapters are described as suiting most North American standard fuel cans. Australian jerry cans and plastic containers use a range of neck sizes, so measure the opening on the can you own before ordering. The red can shown in the images is not included.
• Petrol vapour ignites easily. Work outdoors or in a well ventilated space, keep naked flames, cigarettes and hot exhaust components clear, and let a hot engine cool before refuelling it.
• Static is a genuine ignition source when moving fuel. Keep the nozzle in contact with the filler neck and avoid pumping in windy, dusty conditions.
• The supplier states no explosion-proof rating or certification for this pump. If you move petrol regularly or in quantity, satisfy yourself the equipment suits the job.
• Non-potable water only. Do not use it for drinking water.

Worth keeping alongside the generator and the spare cans, and worth ordering batteries at the same time.
