Plug a generic dongle into a Focus or a Mondeo and half the car stays invisible. Ford runs its body, cluster and convenience modules on a second, slower network called MS-CAN, and most cheap readers only ever see the HS-CAN side. This USB adapter carries a switch to move between the two, which is the difference between FORScan being useful and being an exercise in frustration.
The MS-CAN switch is the whole point
A toggle on the housing flips the adapter between HS-CAN and MS-CAN. On HS-CAN it behaves like any OBD2 interface, reading engine and transmission data. Switched across, it reaches the modules Ford put on the slower bus, where most of the hidden configuration lives. Without that switch those modules simply do not answer. The board pairs a CH340 USB chip with a 25K80 microcontroller, the combination the Ford-specific software is written around.
Switching on what the factory left dormant
Read the vehicle configuration and you can see what was enabled at build and what was not. Running ELMconfig, FORScan, FOCCCUS or FF2, the adapter supports coding and customisations, injector coding, actuator tests, service procedures, module software updates and forced DPF regeneration. Fault codes read and clear across all modules, not only the emissions ones. What is actually changeable depends on the software and the modules fitted to the individual car, so confirm a feature is supported for your model first.
Still a competent everyday scan tool
Away from Ford it works as an ordinary OBD2 / EOBD interface. Live data covers engine speed, vehicle speed, air flow, intake temperature, short and long term fuel trims, timing advance, oxygen sensor output and fuel system status, which is enough to chase a rough idle without guessing. The supplier lists compatibility with Ford, Mazda, VW, GM, Chevrolet, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki, Jaguar, Land Rover, Chrysler and Honda.
Key features
- HS-CAN / MS-CAN toggle: reaches the Ford modules a single-bus reader cannot see.
- CH340 and 25K80 chipset: the pairing the Ford tools are built to talk to.
- All-module code access: read and erase faults beyond the OBD2 set.
- Live data stream: watch sensor values move while the engine runs.
- Wired USB: a cable connection to the laptop for long coding sessions.
