Getting old petrol out of a mower tank at the end of the season is a messy job with a jug and a funnel. This hand siphon does it without tipping anything over: drop one hose into the tank, run the other into a container on the ground, and squeeze the rubber bulb a few times until gravity takes over.
Squeeze the bulb, then let gravity work
The pump body is a large-bore rubber ball. Each squeeze pushes air out and draws liquid up the intake hose, and once fluid crests the bulb the siphon sustains itself. You stop pumping. Flow continues until the source empties or you lift the hose clear. Two clear PVC hoses come with it, so the fluid is visible the whole way through and you know the moment a tank runs dry. The supplier rates that PVC as oil and high-temperature resistant, which matters more when you are drawing warm engine oil than cold fuel.
What it will and will not reach
Small engines are the natural fit: mowers, brush cutters, hedge trimmers, generators and similar gear. The supplier is specific that it suits machines without an anti-theft filter screen, and most modern cars have a mesh baffle in the filler neck that a hose this size cannot pass, so treat car tanks as unlikely rather than assumed. Away from fuel, the same setup works as an aquarium water changer or for shifting rainwater between drums. Hose length is given as 6.5 ft (about 2 m) in the title, without stating whether that covers one hose or the pair.
Key features
- Self-priming bulb: a few squeezes start the siphon, then flow carries on unaided.
- Two clear hoses: watch the fluid move and stop before the receiving container overfills.
- No power required: nothing electrical near fuel vapour and no battery to flatten.
- Packs down small: coils into a toolbox, a boot or a shelf in the mower shed.
- Broad fluid range: the supplier lists petrol, diesel, engine oil and water among common liquids.

Before you use it
- Petrol vapour ignites easily. Work outdoors or somewhere well ventilated, keep the job clear of flames, cigarettes, heaters and anything that sparks, and have a suitable extinguisher within reach.
- Moving fuel through a hose builds static. Stand the receiving container on the ground rather than in a ute tray or on a tow bar, and let metal touch metal so charge can equalise.
- Decant only into a container intended for that fluid. The supplier names no fuel container standard for the receiving vessel, so that check sits with you.
- Flush the hoses through if you switch between fuel and aquarium water. The same hoses handle both and residue carries across.
For the price of a couple of tanks of fuel it saves a lot of spillage and a lot of swearing. Worth keeping alongside the mower and the jerry cans.
