Factory CarPlay from the mid-2010s onward is genuinely good, right up to the point where the lead has to come out of the console every trip. Cars fitted with the wired version never got a wireless option. The CP-85 sits in that gap.

Fitment is narrow, and worth reading twice

The supplier is specific: it suits cars with original wired CarPlay from model year 2016 onward, running iOS 10 or above, with CarPlay enabled in the vehicle's settings. Outside those conditions there is nothing for it to connect to. Once paired it reconnects by itself on every later trip.

The hardware behind the handover

Inside is a 1.2 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 running Linux, with 64 MB RAM and 16 MB ROM. The wireless side is dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz plus Bluetooth 5.0, and the rated -20 to 75 degrees C range covers a console that bakes through a Queensland summer.
